This program prepares resident care attendants or home support workers to work in acute care hospital areas, continuing care facilities or community facilities with a practical nursing certificate.
The program focuses on health promotion and prevention for individuals from infancy to adulthood. Effective communication skills, orientation to practice of nursing, and the process of health and healing within the context of the community are examined.
Each semester includes a practicum experience related to the particular client population.
This program is a one year Certificate currently under development for delivery in Merritt for September 2009.

Program Admission Requirement
· Grade 12 or GED
· Biology 12 with a grade of C or equivalent within the last 5 years
· English 12 with a grade of C or equivalent.
· Acceptable RCS or HSA/RCA Certificate (certificates issued prior to 1993 also require Caring for Persons with Dementia course)
· Minimum 600 hours as Resident Care Attendant in a facility working with a group of patients at the same time (confirmed by
employer's letter) within the past two years.
Career Opportunities:
Home Support/Resident Care Attendants may find employment in the continually growing field of continuing care. Their work will be mainly with the elderly but, may also include working with children, young adults, and families. Employment may be in agencies such as intermediate and extended care facilities, special care units for persons with dementia, adult day centres, private homes and home support agencies.
This program is based on a caring philosophy and provides the student with the knowledge, skills and values to practice as front line care providers in continuing care. Students learn to provide residents/clients assistance with personal grooming and provide a safe environment. They are prepared to function in a variety of settings, including intermediate care, special needs, extended care, home support and some adult day centres.
This program is offered over seven (7) months. NVIT places students in two clinicals and upon completion of these clinicals, students return to the classroom.

Fees are subject to revisions by the NVIT Board each year. Any revisions in fees will come into effect September 1, 2008.

Academic (first & second year levels) and Career/Technical Programs:
$70.34 per credit (courses range from 2 to 6 credits each).
Academic (third & fourth year levels) Programs:
$101.73 per credit (courses range from 3 to 6 credits each).
College Readiness Program:
College Readiness courses are tuition free. Students must pay any applicable lab fees and the student activity fee (see details following).
