A post-master's option is available to registered nurses with a master's degree in nursing who wish to enhance their clinical expertise and achieve standing as an advanced practice nurse. Students who complete the post-master's coursework are eligible to sit for certification as advanced practice nurses.
The master's degree program is offered in conjunction with MU Graduate School and is part of a long tradition in graduate education at the University of Missouri. The master's program in nursing admitted its first students in 1968. As of May 2008, 1,020 students have graduated from this Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)-accredited program.
The program is designed to empower its graduates to:
practice professional behavior consistent with advanced practice standards;
integrate essential knowledge for advanced clinical practice from nursing and other health-care perspectives;
collaborate effectively with clients and others in education, research, and advanced practice;
assimilate the advanced practice roles in providing care
The Master of Science in Nursing degree with an Advanced Nursing Practice major is available to nationally certified nurse practitioners seeking preparation as a master's prepared advanced practice nurse. This unique program facilitates student integration and synthesis of theory and research as the foundation for advanced nursing practice.
Courses in this major emphasize analysis of theoretical foundations for nursing practice, evidenced based clinical practice protocols, advanced practice professional role attributes and issues, and development of political action skill through knowledge of health policy formulation processes.
Expansion of current clinical practice knowledge is supported through completion of support and elective courses. Current certification
he College's Master of Nursing (MN) program provides BSN nurses with the educational core to practice in advanced and rapidly changing health care settings. The MN program offers several educational avenues to prepare nurses who demonstrate knowledge and detailed practice in selected areas of nursing for advanced practice, leadership and education.

The graduate core and advanced practice core are taken by all master's students. Post Master's Certificate students may receive advanced placement credit. All students take appropriate specialty core in its entirety. Please see individual specialized tracks for specific additional curriculum requirements. Courses designated as a practicum are precepted clinical experiences. The Master of Science in Nursing prepares first quality leaders in advanced nursing practice as family nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists. Graduates are expected to function as advanced practitioners in regional health care settings, as faculty in schools of nursing, or as mid-level administrators in complex health care organizations.
