There are many nursing schools in Texas, and the pre-professional requirements for admission to schools of nursing vary. Most Texas nursing programs require two academic years of university work (60 semester hours) as listed below. Since each school of nursing has its own specific requirements, students are advised to consult the catalogs of the nursing schools they hope to attend. Courses recommended by most Texas nursing schools include: BIO 147, 148, 235, 242; CHEM 143, 144; PSY 131, 236; SOC 130; MATH 133; STAT 374; HIST 131, 132; POLS 231, 232; ENG 131, 132; and three to twelve hours of electives from the natural sciences or behavioral sciences. Electives should be approved by the individual nursing school. Most nursing schools do not require and do not accept courses from kinesiology. Schools that require or accept such courses normally accept only two or three hours of kinesiology courses. Many nursing schools also require that students be certified in first aid and CPR before admittance to a nursing program. The Health Professions Advisory Committee can help you determine specific requirements for particular nursing programs.

Students must complete 60 semester hours of designated courses to be considered for the BSN program. It is recommended that students complete all the pre-nursing courses including the liberal arts requirements before beginning the nursing program.) If either of these courses was taken more than five years ago, an advisor will discuss the possibility of taking a refresher course to update your skills. It is up to you to determine whether you feel competent to enroll in advanced courses that require an understanding of basic concepts in these areas.

RN-to-MS Admissions Requirements
RN-to-MS applicants must be graduated from an associate’s or diploma program and have an RN or be eligible for licensure.
A minimum of 60 semester hours from a basic nursing program including:

English (including Composition)— 6
Social Science (including one Psychology)—6

Grades of “C-“ or higher and a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. A higher GPA may be necessary to be competitive for admission.
Effective for the entering class of Fall 2009, all RN-MS students as part of the 60 pre-requisite credits will be required to have completed a 3-credit College Math course. Students may take any credited Math course but an introductory statistics course is highly recommended.
RN with BS in another field to MS Requirements

Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in another field must take the following bachelor degree level courses or Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) to fulfill undergraduate nursing pre-requisites:

The graduate of the baccalaureate program is a generalist in the practice of nursing, able to design, implement and evaluate nursing systems for individuals, families and small groups. As a generalist, the graduate uses a general concept of nursing as a framework for integrating and organizing specific knowledge in nursing, the sciences and the humanities.

Admission Requirements:
Approximately 60 semester hours of general education pre-requisite are required for application to the clinical nursing major. If a student has transferred to MU or the School of Nursing, the application can take place after the sophomore year. A pre-clinical GPA of a little over 3.0 is considered competitive for clinicals (but does not guarantee admission). The School of Nursing admits 55 students into the clinical major for the fall and winter semesters.

Academic program plans are developed for each student by the academic adviser based on prerequisite and corequisite courses. The program plans are filed in the student’s folder in the academic advisor’s office and are used by the student and the student’s faculty/adviser for planning throughout the remainder of the student’s nursing program. All students are provided a copy of their program plan. Program changes must be approved by the SA&P Committee via the undergraduate academic advisor. Any alteration in a planned program has the potential of delaying the completion of the program one or more semesters.

Nursing students may elect to enroll in part-time or full-time schedules. Clinical major students must have approval from the SA&P Committee for part-time study.

Nursing knowledge is developmental in nature. Each course is designed to build on knowledge and skills acquired in previous nursing and non-nursing courses. Therefore, the faculty strongly encourage students to keep syllabi, notes, and required texts from previous courses so that they can refer to them as needed.

or the traditional BSN, the first two (freshman and sophomore) years, nursing students are designated pre-nursing majors. The subsequent two (junior and senior) years, nursing students are designated clinical nursing majors. Students are required to complete approximately 60 semester hours of general-education and prerequisite coursework before being admitted to the clinical nursing major. After a pre-nursing student completes the pre-nursing credits, he or she must earn 60 additional credit hours to complete the clinical major. MU requires a minimum of 120 credit hours for the bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Students apply for admission to the clinical major during the last semester of general-education and prerequisite coursework. Clinical-major applications can be picked up in the undergraduate student advisers’ office (S235) and must be submitted by Feb. 1 for fall semester admission and Sept. 15 for spring semester admission.

Graduate of an accredited RN program (diploma or associate degree).
Current active unrestricted, unencumbered RN OR a graduate eligible to sit for the NCLEX.
Completed application form and receipt of official transcript(s) of previous academic work.

Offered as a primarily web-based program, prospective students with little or no computer skills are encouraged to seek additional experience in windows-based computer applications prior to beginning the nursing sequence. It is expected that each student enrolled in the nursing program will have access to email and Internet as well as word processing capabilities.

Validation of Previous Nursing Education:

Thirty semester hours of credit are granted for previous nursing education, experience and continuing education. The credit will be granted upon successful completion of the first clinical nursing course.

Graduation Requirements:

A minimum of 128 semester hours are required for graduation with a grade point average of not less than 2.0 overall and 2.25 in the nursing major. 32 semester hours of credit must be earned from Ashland University.

To earn a BSN degree from Ashland University, 30 hours of nursing credit must be earned through Ashland University. Department of Nursing proficiency credit can be earned for a maximum of 2 nursing courses. A student must enroll in and successfully complete a minimum of 4 required Ashland University nursing courses.

A minimum of 60 semester hours of credit must be earned from a 4-year

college/university. 30 semester hours of Ashland University required nursing courses can be used toward meeting this requirement. The remaining semester hours may be met through non-nursing course work.

The last 16 semester hours earned before graduation must be earned from Ashland University.

Apply for admission to the UAH School of Graduate Studies. Currently enrolled graduate nursing students must notify the Graduate Studies office and complete required application forms. Applicants who hold MSN degrees from other institutions must provide official transcripts certifying that the applicant holds a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
Complete a one-sheet application for admission with the Office of Students Affairs, UAH College of Nursing. Applications are available in the Nursing Office of Student Affairs.
Submit official copies of transcripts from each college/university attended (sent to the Graduate Studies office).
Admission Requirements for MSN Program

Priority Application Deadline: April 15

The College of Nursing Requirements are:
Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate program with a major in nursing.
Overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all baccalaureate coursework or on the last 60 semester hours of coursework completed.
Acceptable score on either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogy Test (MAT) taken within the last five years. Desired scores are 1500 on the GRE or 410 on the MAT.
Three completed College of Nursing Graduate Recommendation Forms from individuals familiar with the applicant’s clinical and academic abilities. One recommendation is encouraged to be from a former nursing instructor/dean and one from an employer/supervisor. Forms are available in the Office of Nursing Student Affairs.
Satisfactory completion of an elementary statistics course.
Submit the UAH Graduate Application for Admission. (download application form.)
Complete and submit the Nursing Application to the Office of Nursing Student Affairs by April 15.
Hold an active, unencumbered RN license in the state of practice.

Students who meet or exceed both the GPA requirement of 3.0 and the desired test score of 1500 on the Graduate Records Examination or 410 on the Miller’s Analogies Test are eligible for unconditional admission to the graduate program. A minimum of 60 semester hours from an associate’s degree Nursing program. In addition to nursing coursework (C+ or better), Liberal Arts and Science courses (C or better) must be distributed among at least six General Education groups and include Statistics. (SUNY Delhi offers an online research methods/statistics course that may be taken as a co-requisite.) Required LA&S courses include Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Microbiology, English, and Psychology.
