The Social Work, Health and Nursing Faculty trains teachers in nursing, obstetrics and geriatric and paediatric nursing with the bachelor’s in Pedagogics of Nursing and provides academic training on the path to becoming a nursing teacher. With this bachelor’s course, the University is providing a specific academic offer in nursing teacher training.

The educational goal of the course is to qualify nurses systematically for vocational teaching and teaching-relevant nursing tasks. A modern understanding of training and independent training goals are taken into account, along with integrative practical relevance (lectures and nursing practicals) of the profession in vocational training.

Therefore, the course qualifies for two fields of nursing activity. On the one hand for a teaching role in training and further training in the nursing profession and, on the other, for application-oriented nursing science. To strengthen the action orientation and to guarantee the highest possible practical relevance, on the teaching side the course incorporates an accompanied practical phase over 20 weeks in a later working field and practicals in the teaching-learning lab. On the nursing science side, a project is undertaken with healthcare institutions from the Lake Constance and Upper Swabia region. In addition to the pedagogical-didactical, educational and professional teaching, there is a particular focus with the main subjects on a subject-oriented consideration of nursing and teaching. Accordingly, there are detailed seminars to promote personal and social competence (e.g. conversation, rhetoric, mediation).

30 students a year are enrolled in the winter semester. The full-time Pedagogics of Nursing course lasts seven semesters, including a practical semester and concludes with the internationally recognized Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). The two-year nursing program prepares individuals for nursing careers involving the delivery of direct client care in settings such as hospitals, physician offices, clinics, extended care facilities, and the client’s home. The curriculum includes a balance of nursing and non-nursing courses. Students must obtain a “C” or better in all nursing and natural science courses to progress in the program. Nursing courses are designed to provide learning opportunities for acquiring the necessary nursing knowledge and skill to practice nursing at the associate degree level. The focus is holistic health promotion and wellness.

The Associate Degree Nursing program is offered in Bluefield, on the main campus of the College, and in Beckley at the Beckley Center, located in Harper Industrial Park. The nursing courses at the Beckley Center are taught by Bluefield State College nursing faculty. Students may elect to take the non-nursing program courses at Bluefield State College or other area colleges. Courses taken at other colleges must have prior approval. These courses must be equivalent to the program courses as judged by Bluefield State College (see Transfer Credit section).

Eligibility requirements for admission to the associate degree nursing program include:
Meet general admission requirements.
Eligibility to enter MATH 101 by the fall semester of entrance year into the program. It is strongly recommended that students complete with a “C” or better BIOL 201/203 and MATH 101 prior to admission into the program.
An overall high school grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, or a score of 45 on each of the GED exams.
a. Have completed with a “C” or better one unit of high school algebra, one unit of high school biology and one unit of high school chemistry (ACT/SAT equivalent score of 19 in mathematics will substitute for the algebra course)
OR
b. Be enrolled at Bluefield State College or another accredited institution of higher learning prior to application, having completed a minimum of 12 credit hours** and achieving a 2.5 or better grade point average. A “C” grade or better is required in each of the following: one mathematics course, one biology course and one introductory chemistry course. (Also required for college students are copies of their high school transcripts and ACT/SAT scores). **Developmental or Remedial courses will not be considered.
Complete HESI Admission Test with 75% or better overall average AND a 70% or better in each of the following sections: Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Grammar and Biology.
Completion of Health 100, with a “C” or better, prior to admission to the program.
Applicants exceeding these academic standards and course requirements will be given first priority.

The Associate Degree Nursing program is approved by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Upon successful completion of the associate degree program in nursing, the graduate is eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Exam - RN (NCLEX-RN). Successful completion of this examination allows the graduate to apply for licensure as a registered nurse.

All applicants should check the College catalog for general
admission requirements and must complete the Black Hawk
College Application for Admission. The completed application
and an official transcript form high school and/or college most
recently attended are to be sent to the Office ofAdmissions and
Records. Students areAdmitted twice a year –August and January.
In addition to meeting the general admission requirements, the
student who wishes to enter the Associate Degree Nursing
Program must meet the following requirements and will be
evaluated on an individual basis. Such students must have:
1. Earned a high school diploma or the equivalent.
2. An individual conference with an advisor in the Advising
Center.
3. A 2.7 (C+) cumulative GPA.
4. Completed all prerequisites for required courses with a
grade of “C” or above.
5. Completed all developmental courses determined by the
Compass Test with a grade of “C” or above.
6. Completed Nurse Entrance Test (NET) with a score that
meets/exceeds the national standard or completes remediation
as defined by the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
7. Achieved an ACT composite score of 20 or greater if the
applicant graduated from high school within the past 5
years and has taken no college courses.
8. High school applicants who do not meet GPA, did not
graduate within 25% of high school class, and any
applicant with no college courses must take nine semester
hours of college level courses.
9. Physical ability to provide client care.
10. Preference will be given to Illinois residents.
• Students with chronic health problems or physical disabilities are
accepted unless the health problem or disability is such that the student
would be unable to complete the objectives of the program. For

Admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program is highly
competitive. Students should apply early in the priority filing period.
Not all eligible candidates will be able to be admitted regardless of
the date of submission of their application.
Only those students with the highest overall qualifications will be
accepted into the ADN Program.
Please Note:Any student not accepted for the current nursing class and
who desires to be considered for subsequent nursing classes, must repeat
the entire admission process.

Applicants to the online MSN program in Leadership in Health Systems must meet at least one of the following criteria:
Hold a baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a 3.0 GPA, or
Be a registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree in another discipline and enroll in 18 hours of undergraduate courses to bridge into the program, or
Complete the RN to MSN option

Enrolling on Probationary Status

After due consideration, the Admission, Progression, and Graduation Committee may permit a student who wishes to pursue the Master of Science in Nursing degree, but does not meet the admission requirements for the Graduate Nursing Program, to enroll on a probationary status. A graduate nursing student enrolled in this status must begin the program by completing 12 semester hours of core and foundation courses, which are prescribed by the nursing advisor.

Degree-seeking students on a probationary status must earn a grade of B or better in each of the prescribed courses. During the probationary status, if a grade of less than B is earned, the student will be prohibited from further enrollment in the Graduate Nursing Program. The student may reapply after two academic years. Students who successfully complete the 12 semester hours of prescribed courses will be admitted as regular Degree-Seeking students.

The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) is designed to accommodate two groups of students: those who are entering a nursing program for the first time (traditional students) and those licensed practical nurses (transitional students) seeking educational mobility to the associate degree level.

In the rapidly changing health care field, registered nurses have several career options that are both challenging and rewarding. They are advocates and health educators for patients, families, and communities. The registered nurse is responsible for assessing, identifying and implementing nursing care for the patient. The registered nurse also assists physicians, administers medications and treatments and participates in the patient’s convalescence and rehabilitation.

The Associate of Science in Nursing Program is approved by the Indiana State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission. Graduates of the ASN program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination to become registered nurses. Graduates may seek immediate employment or choose to transfer their credits to a four-year institution offering a baccalaureate degree.

In addition to general admission requirements, students interested in pursuing the ASN must take a nursing entrance exam and meet the required standards. Once enrolled, all required courses for the ASN program must be passed at a “C” grade level or above.

Dramatic changes are taking place in the field of professional nursing. It has become a challenging career for men and women. Nursing is practiced with all age groups and in a variety of settings. Hospitals, schools, homes, and community are just some of the possible practice sites.

The joint offering of the West Virginia University School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program by Glenville State College and West Virginia University School of Nursing is a unique and exciting program that combines the advantages of a small college environment and experiences in a rural setting with experiences in a major medical center. Students interested in the nursing program may enroll at Glenville State College as a pre nursing student meeting the admission requirements outlined below.

Registration in the pre nursing program during the freshman year does not assure admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN). Formal application for admission to the BSN program takes place early in the second semester of the freshman year. Enrollment in the BSN program is limited to 20 students.

For entry into the pre nursing program, the student must have an ACT composite score of 20 or greater or an equivalent SAT score. The student must furnish an official transcript from an accredited high school which indicates successful completion of the following courses: Biology 1 unit; Chemistry 1 unit; English 4 units; Mathematics - 3 units including at least 2 units in Algebra. Students who have not completed these courses will be considered on an individual basis. Enrollment in foundation courses may be necessary before beginning the usual freshman year courses.

The program meets the general education requirements of both Glenville State College and West Virginia University and incorporates the WVU School of Nursing professional nursing requirements.

The applicant’s academic record is the major factor in the decision on admission. The West Virginia resident must have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 or above on a scale of 0.0 to 4.0 on all college work attempted, to qualify for consideration.

As part of the WVU School of Nursing, the program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The freshman and sophomore years of this program are completed at Glenville State College. The junior and senior years are completed at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Montgomery, West Virginia.

The Castleton Nursing Department offers a major program leading to the Associate in Science in Nursing degree. Graduates are eligible for licensure as Registered Nurses and are qualified to function in a beginning level staff position in various health care agencies. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). The program is approved by the Vermont State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

In addition to the College’s general admission requirements, admission to the Associate in Science in Nursing program is selective and based on the following minimal criteria:
Combined Critical Reading and Math SAT scores of 1000 or above
Graduation from high school in the upper quarter of class
Evaluation of prior post-secondary course work
Meeting with the Nursing Chairperson

Challenge examinations are available to students applying for admission to the Nursing program. A student seeking to challenge nursing courses must be one of the following:

- A Licensed Practical Nurse with one year of employment in that role.
(A Licensed Practical Nurse without a year of employment may also challenge,
but only NUR 1211.)

- Student transferring from another A.S.N. program or its equivalent.

Successful challenge of both NUR1211 and NUR1212 could enable a student to enter the nursing program in the fall semester of the second year, provided all prerequisites are met. (NOTE: A minimum of 21 semester hours in nursing must be earned at Castleton.) The nursing curriculum can be completed in two years. All nursing courses and BIO2011 and BIO 2012 and BIO2125 must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.

The Castleton Nursing Program has historically enjoyed an excellent passage rate on the NCLEX-RN.

This level is for all first time college students and for college students who have less than 30 credits of college level work.

First time college students must meet the general admission requirements of Alvernia College.

First time college students with less than 12 credits of college level work must have a composite score of 1000 or greater on the SAT and a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher, with consideration given to college preparatory course of study.

College students must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 with consideration given to individual courses. Grades and credits from developmental courses are not considered.

Two (2) letters of reference

As required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, applicants shall have completed work equal to a standard high school course with a minimum of 16 units, including 4 units of English, 3 units of Social Studies, 2 units of Mathematics (1 of which is Algebra) and 2 units of Science with a related laboratory or the equivalent.

Advance Standing for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):

Advance standing is available for the Licensed Practical Nurse. Details of the Advance Standing Policy are available from the Nursing Department.

Admission Requirements for Sophomore Level:

This level is for college students who have completed at least 30 credits of college level work including the prescribed science courses for the freshman year. To be eligible for admission to the nursing program the applicant must:

Meet the general admission requirements of Alvernia College.

A minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher

Provide official transcripts or document current enrollment in the prescribed science courses for the freshman year.

Two (2) letters of reference

The program of Bachelor of Nursing is open to holders of student graduation from high school part 2 (Bac.2). The pieces to be submitted are as follows:
A completed registration form.
Payment of fees non-refundable amount of 400 gourdes.
The original birth certificate or extract of the National Archives and a photocopy.
The certificate of secondary school 1st and 2nd parts (Bac.1 and Bac.2) and a photocopy.
A card valid tax identification (TIN) and a photocopy.
Four (4) passport photos.

Student must be admitted to the college before applying to the nursing program.
The process of applying to the School of Nursing is as follows:
Complete the School of Nursing application.
With the application, submit an essay on “Why I Want To Be A Nurse” for Standard ADN and Baccalaureate Track I, “Why I Want To Be an RN” for the LPN to ADN or “Why I Want To Obtain A BSN Degree” for Baccalaureate Track II. Prelicensure students should include in their essay how they feel they meet the qualifications addressed in the following statement: Nursing is a profession that demands specific qualities of physical and emotional health, intellectual ability, ability to benefit from constructive criticism, communication skills, nonjudgmental attitude, leadership, moral character, responsibility and dependability.
Receive information on eligibility for Indiana Registered Nurse Licensure (Associate Degree and Baccalaureate Track I Programs)
The applicant must meet the following criteria.
Graduate from high school (or meet the GED requirement).
Demonstrate a ranking in the upper two-thirds of applicant’s high school graduating class or previous college course work with an overall GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent. A GED composite score of 50 may substitute for this requirement. Satisfactory completion of college courses relevant to nursing may nullify unsatisfactory high school or GED requirements.
ADN and BSN Track I applicants must complete the ACT or SAT and the Nelson Denny Reading Test. College Placement Tests (CPT) are required for adult students. LPN to ADN applicants must provide proof of current LPN licensure. RN - BSN Completion Program (Track II) applicants must be graduates of a state approved school of nursing (associate degree or diploma program) and have an active RN license in Indiana. New graduates will be given conditional acceptance and must present an Indiana RN license (or a valid license in the state where clinical’s occur) by the end of the first semester of nursing courses in order to continue in the program. Actively practicing nurses must present an employer’s verification of current practice and competency. Nurses who have not been actively practicing must pass a standardized test to validate current nursing knowledge.
LPN to ADN applicants must achieve a score in the 50th percentilein the NLN Acceleration Challenge Exam I and must meet the requirements for prerequisite course work.
