Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have advanced clinical training and educational preparation to manage out health care interventions at an “advanced practice level”. Registered nurses can take their basic nursing experience and knowledge to a higher level of practice as a nurse practitioner.
Nurse practitioners work in a variety of clinical settings including outpatient clinics, ambulatory care settings, emergency departments, inpatient units, community health agencies, and private practice settings as co-owners and operators with other nurse practitioners, physicians and other health care providers. There are 88,000 nurse practitioners in the United States.

Students completing the track are awarded a Master Science Nursing degree and are eligible for state and national certification. Professional and Personal Qualifications
Students are admitted to the FNP track based on academic preparation, interest in advanced practice nursing and commitment to the underserved. Consideration is given to those who have experience in the health care field either as a health care worker, a volunteer or who have shadowed a nurse practitioner and to those who speak a second language, especially Spanish. We encourage applicants and students alike to become active in the state and regional chapters of the California Association for Nurse Practitioners .
Successful applicants reflect a demonstrated commitment to multicultural primary care and service to underserved communities. Approximately 24 students are admitted each year.

The Niehoff School of Nursing offers the Master of Science in Nursing degree to prepare professional nurses for leadership roles at an advanced-practice level in the care of oncology patients and their families. The explosion of scientific and technological discoveries in cancer care as well as the shift in the site of care requires advanced-practice oncology nurses be prepared to deliver complex care in new settings. This program’s educational and clinical opportunities are focused across the cancer care continuum (genetic screening, primary prevention, acute care and palliative care). Nurse leaders of the future must have a blend of clinical and entrepreneurial skills to lead interdisciplinary, cancer-related teams and to design and implement innovative health-care practices. Entrepreneurial opportunities and skills are emphasized for developing strategic partnerships, influencing health-care decision making and providing fiscally sound management.

The following admission information is provided for applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree. For admission requirements for the RN to MSN option, without an undergraduate degree, please refer to the “RN to MSN Program.”
Students are admitted to the programs in fall and spring semesters. To study full-time, applicants to the nurse practitioner tracks should apply for fall admission. Part-time plans of study are available for both fall and spring admission cycles. The nurse practitioner programs prepare primary care nurse practitioners.
In addition to the general UCF graduate admission requirements, applicants to this program must provide:
One official transcript (in a sealed envelope) from each college/university attended.
A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or a bachelor’s degree.
Current Florida Registered Nurse license.
Undergraduate course in statistics.
A personal statement describing interest in advanced nursing education and career goals related to the program track.
Two letters of recommendation evaluating potential for graduate study by nursing instructors, nurse employers or nurses with advanced degrees.

The Master of Science in Nursing Program is designed for baccalaureate prepared nurses who have strong undergraduate foundations in critical thinking, decision-making, and nursing practice. The program consists of three options, with specialization in clinical nursing for chronic illness care, nurse anesthesia, and school nursing. The core curriculum centers on professional nursing issues, nursing science, and research methods for building nursing knowledge. The advanced practice chronic illness care option focuses on the delivery of comprehensive care to individuals and groups experiencing chronic illnesses. The nurse anesthetist option focuses on the administration of anesthesia to individuals requiring surgical and non-surgical diagnostic procedures. The school nurse option focuses on delivery of comprehensive care to individuals in the school environment.

The master of science in nursing (MSN) program at Seattle University is grounded in the Jesuit ideals of teaching, service, education for values, and growth of persons. MSN Program Information
The traditional MSN degree provides experienced professional nurses with additional education needed to function in a rapidly changing health care environment that demands new and innovative approaches to nursing and health care delivery. Graduates are prepared for positions as leaders in community organizations and institutions, or as primary nurse care practitioners. The Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) Immersion is an accelerated path to the MSN for non-nurses holding undergraduate degrees in other fields. The APN Immersion prepares graduates to be primary care nurse practitioners.

Once thought to be the best kept secret in nursing, nurse anesthesia is now being recognized for it’s contribution to safe, cost effective quality patient care. Nurse anesthesia was the first advance practice role as a clinical nursing specialty. Nurse anesthetists have been administering anesthetics for more than 100 years. Today, more than 25,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA’s) administer more than 65% of the 26 million anesthetics given in the US. CRNA’s are the sole provider’s in 85% of rural settings.
Old Dominion University, School of Nursing’s Nurse Anesthesia Program was established in 1995 when two Norfolk, Virginia, Schools of Nurse Anesthesia merged to form a university-based program. DePaul Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia, which was established in 1949, and the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia, which was established in 1951, agreed to merge into a single program based within the School of Nursing at Old Dominion University. The program was recently accredited for a period of 6 years.
Currently the Master’s of Science Nurse Anesthesia Program is one of several graduate roles within the School of Nursing. Two program options are available in nurse anesthesia. One program option prepares the RN holding a baccalaureate degree to earn a Master’s degree in Nursing and sit for the National Certification Examination for nurse anesthesia. The second program option allows practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to earn a Master’s degree in Nursing. For more information on these programs click on the links below.
