BSc Nursing Practice at Open University UK
If you’re a registered and practising nurse and wish to continue your professional development, this programme will enable you to gain an honours degree. It provides flexible learning opportunities that meet the specific needs of nurses working across a range of settings and specialities in both the NHS and independent sectors.
There are three pathways – Nursing Practice, Nursing Practice (Child Health), and Nursing Practice (Older People) – each of which will enable you to:
cultivate a person-centred perspective to your work with patients, their carers and families
develop reflective and evidenced-based practice approaches to care
consolidate the skills of critical analysis
promote innovative nursing practice.
By the end of your studies, you’ll be able to reflect critically on your practice and will have enhanced your professional expertise to meet the complex challenges of contemporary health care practice.
Planning your studies
All entrants to the BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice must have successfully completed a registered nurse qualification with a UK Higher Education Institution (HEI) awarding body and be able to provide evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (pin number).
You may also have credit to transfer from other health-related study that you have successfully completed. Please see the ‘Credit for previous study elsewhere’ section below for details of how to apply for credit transfer.
In addition to 240 credit points at Levels 1 and 2 (120 minimum at Level 2), you must successfully complete a total of six courses (120 credit points) at Level 3. Three of these are core to all three pathways in this degree programme, and three can be chosen from ‘specialist’ options dependent upon which pathway you have selected.
We recommend that you start your Level 3 study with Nursing: people, policy and practice (K330).
If you hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing or equivalent 240-point qualification(s):
if your DipHE was awarded by the Open University, you can register your intention to study for this degree when you register on individual courses
if your DipHE in Nursing or equivalent was awarded by another Higher Education Institution, you will need to apply for credit transfer towards the Level 1 and Level 2 requirements of this degree – see ‘Credit for previous study elsewhere’ section below.
you only require 120 points from the list of Level 3 courses below, starting with Nursing: people policy and practice. (K330)
