Master Of Science In Nursing at University of Nairobi Kenya

Degree Code: H67

Duration: 2

Faculty/School/Institute offered: SCHOOL OF NURSING SCIENCES

Introduction

The provision of quality nursing care is paramount in prevention of disease, promotion of health and management of diseases, in hospitals and communities.  In Kenya, the Nursing Profession is in need of nurses trained at higher levels to take up positions in clinical practice, research, and teaching.

The department of Nursing Science was established to train students for Diploma in Advanced Nursing in 1968.  This programme graduated several generations of candidates from Kenya and abroad.  The diploma graduates worked in the private and public sectors as Nurses, Teachers, and Nurse Managers both in Kenya and abroad.  In 1992, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Programme was started.  Several graduates have gone through the programme in the department.  These nurses continue to work in this country and abroad in both public and private hospitals, and other institutions.

In Kenya, there is no institution of higher learning offering a higher degree at Master of Science in Nursing (MSc.N), and there are only a few such institutions in the African region.  It is therefore recognized that a programme offering higher degrees and openings in further education at Masters and PhD levels is  required for the profession in Kenya.

The department will train nurses with proper nursing skills in various specializations within the nursing profession.  These major areas requiring specialized training include Obstetric Nursing/Midwifery, Medical- Surgical Nursing, Nursing Education, Paediatric Nursing, Nursing administration, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Oncology Nursing and Oral Care/Dental Nursing among others.  It is hoped that through training, there will be improved supply of skilled manpower in the field of Nursing.

The objectives of this programme are to:-

(i)      Develop personnel specialized in clinical areas of Nursing.

(ii)     Equip students with skills and ability to teach and carry out research in Nursing.

(iii)    Equip students with managerial and administrative skills to enable them undertake professional leadership positions in their areas of specialization.

Geriatric Nursing Organizations at Dickinson State University North Dakota

The Coalition of Geriatric Nursing Organizations (CGNO) represents over 24,000 geriatric nurses seeking to improve the health care of older adults across care settings and is supported by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, located at New York University College of Nursing.

The Coalition organized in October 2001 and chose two major issues for action that would affect older persons: 1) positively affecting the quality of long term care through improving and implementing the magnet nursing home project, Pioneer Network practices, and other quality programs or practices; and 2) facilitating the measurement of quality in long term care by supporting and advancing the Minimum Data Set, used in nursing homes, and other tools appropriate for the long term care setting, including quality indicators and measures derived from those instruments.

In 2003, the Hartford Institute with the CGNO convened a one-day expert panel meeting to explore strategies to strengthen the utilization of Advance Practice Nurses (APNs) in nursing homes. Following presentations at the American Medical Directors Association Annual Meeting and the Gerontological Society of America, the six recommended strategies were published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2005.

In 2005, the Hartford Institute with the CGNO convened a two-day summit to explore the feasibility of developing Teaching Nursing Home (TNH) models to prepare a health care professional work force knowledgeable about long term care. Summit participants articulated goals and principles impacting TNHs. These goals and principles together with the results of two pilot interdisciplinary TNH academic/nursing home collaborative, were presented at the Gerontological Society of America in 2006.

In 2007, The Hartford Institute and each of the CGNO participants joined the National Steering Committee of the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign. This campaign seeks to improve the quality of life and care for nursing home residents and workers. In 2008, these same organizations joined the Elder Workforce Alliance, a broadly based collaborative that seeks to implement recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s report, Retooling for an Aging America.

The potential for the Coalition to make a positive impact on the care of older adults across the continuum is unbounded. Indeed, by speaking with one voice in letters, committees and hearings, the Coalition of Geriatric Nursing Organizations takes leadership in shaping policy and legislation and improving regulations to benefit older adults.

Geriatric Nursing Education at Dickinson State University North Dakota

The Geriatric Nursing Education Project, proudly administered by the AACN and generously funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation, incorporates several complementary programs to ultimately improve nursing care for older adults through curriculum enhancement, faculty development and scholarship opportunities.

AACN, in collaboration with The Hartford Institute and New York University, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Awards for Excellence in Gerontological Nursing Education.

AACN Statement of Support for Geriatric Nursing Education

New Series of Web-Based Interactive Case Studies Available
AACN and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing are pleased to offer a new faculty resource: The Geriatrics and the Advanced Practice Curriculum: A Series of Web-Based Interactive Case Studies. This online tool is a “user-friendly” way for faculty to readily integrate essential geriatric nursing content into non-gerontological GNP and CNS programs.

HGNI Provides Photographs Depicting Geriatric Care to Nursing Schools
As as member of the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI), AACN encourages nursing schools to add more images depicting care for elderly patients to their Web sites. Currently, nursing program Web sites display a disproportionate number of images showing pediatric care and relatively few examples of geriatric care. To support this change, The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, another HGNI member, has created a catalog of geriatric nursing photos that schools may use free of charge.
