It could be you! One in four of the UK population will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. These are not restricted by age, cultural, occupational or income groups. This course provides you with the knowledge and skills to work effectively with individuals experiencing a variety of mental health problems and their families. The skills and knowledge you will develop range from fundamental therapeutic communication to specific interventions utilised with individuals who have problems such as depression and severe mental illness. You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to work in diverse settings, and develop a leadership role within the health and social care team.

What you study

In Year 1 you will undertake a variety of modules which focus upon developing your knowledge and the core skills needed to meet patients’ physical, emotional and safety needs. The modules explore:
knowledge and skills relating to nursing care, compassion and communication, including management of nutrition, fluids and medicines, and infection prevention and control
the patient’s journey through the health and social care system and principles of multidisciplinary care
clinical decision making, evidence-based practice and application of social and life sciences to patient care
the public health agenda, health care systems and organisational aspects of care
professional regulation, governance and ethics of practice.

Modules in Years 2 and 3 will further develop your understanding of the concepts of mental health care. You will develop your clinical decision-making skills and an in-depth knowledge of interventions to promote effective mental health care in a variety of settings. You will explore the political and global influences upon health and social care, and the quality, improvement and safety agendas and their impact upon mental health practice. You will develop your personal effectiveness, leadership and management skills in theory and practice.

All services offered to people with learning disabilities should be person centred. This means that people with learning disabilities should be involved in issues which affect their lives, should expect services to be responsive to individual needs and should have equal rights and opportunities in society. Working as a learning disabilities nurse you will have the opportunity to help people with learning disabilities live their lives in the way which they choose and provide support and guidance with some of the everyday things that we might take for granted. You will assist the person with learning disabilities with all aspects of their lives including health and social care, education, employment, leisure and recreation.

What you study

This will include the management of health and social care of people with learning disabilities which is: person centred and consistent with multiagency and multiprofessional collaborative working; in partnership with service users, carers and advocates; consistent with the notion of individual choice and empowerment; and which supports lifestyle changes. You will explore the political and global influences upon health and social care and the quality, improvement and safety agendas and their impact upon client care. You will also develop your personal effectiveness, leadership and management skills in theory and in practice.

Children’s nursing is about caring for a child, whether healthy or ill. It encompasses the whole family and promotes family-centred care. It recognises that children are unique individuals. This course equips you with the knowledge and skills required to care for children and their families in health and illness. As a children’s nurse you will become an integral part of the multidisciplinary team providing the expertise which underpins care for a child at any age or development stage. You will develop your clinical decision-making and interpersonal skills, and your leadership role within the care team.
