Practical Nursing from Brunswick Community College Tennessee

The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide nursing care to children and adults.

Students will participate in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.

Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Academic Requirements:
• 60% or better in English 30-1 (30) or 70% or better in English 30-2 (33).
• 60% or better in Pure Math 20, Math 20, Applied Math 30 or Math 33

Or:

70% or better in Applied Math 20 or Math 23.
• 60% or better in Biology 30 or 60% in Bow Valley College’s Anatomy and Physiology/ Microbiology.
• A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution will be recognized in lieu of the above requirements. Certificates and diplomas from Alberta Advanced Education approved post-secondary institutions will be considered on an individual basis by the Practical Nurse Program Coordinator.
• Applicants whose first language is not English must present a minimum score of 560 written, or 220 on the computer, on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. An assessment of applicants’ skills in listening and speaking English may also be required. Or complete the Bow Valley College EAP program with a grade of “B”.
• All applicants educated outside of Canada must also demonstrate that they have successfully completed the English Language, Mathematics and Science academic requirements specified above. All foreign transcripts must be assessed by the International Qualifications Assessment Service.
• Up-to-date immunization required.
• Minimum 18 years of age.
• CPR Level C Basic Rescuer.

• The Practical Nurse program is very demanding and requires that you have the mental and physical stamina to succeed. The demands of a job as a Licensed Practical Nurse will require you to:
• work shifts and weekends;
• be on your feet for extended periods of time;
• use your knees, back and arms to move clients who have minimal strength;
• function effectively in stressful situations;
• work unassisted to perform skills.
• It is strongly advised that applicants have computer access with word processing and Internet capabilities.
• Must show certificate of attendance to a medical terminology course – this is also available through Continuing Education in Bow Valley College.

The Castleton Nursing Department offers a major program leading to the Associate in Science in Nursing degree. Graduates are eligible for licensure as Registered Nurses and are qualified to function in a beginning level staff position in various health care agencies. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). The program is approved by the Vermont State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

In addition to the College’s general admission requirements, admission to the Associate in Science in Nursing program is selective and based on the following minimal criteria:
Combined Critical Reading and Math SAT scores of 1000 or above
Graduation from high school in the upper quarter of class
Evaluation of prior post-secondary course work
Meeting with the Nursing Chairperson

Challenge examinations are available to students applying for admission to the Nursing program. A student seeking to challenge nursing courses must be one of the following:

- A Licensed Practical Nurse with one year of employment in that role.
(A Licensed Practical Nurse without a year of employment may also challenge,
but only NUR 1211.)

- Student transferring from another A.S.N. program or its equivalent.

Successful challenge of both NUR1211 and NUR1212 could enable a student to enter the nursing program in the fall semester of the second year, provided all prerequisites are met. (NOTE: A minimum of 21 semester hours in nursing must be earned at Castleton.) The nursing curriculum can be completed in two years. All nursing courses and BIO2011 and BIO 2012 and BIO2125 must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.

The Castleton Nursing Program has historically enjoyed an excellent passage rate on the NCLEX-RN.

This level is for all first time college students and for college students who have less than 30 credits of college level work.

First time college students must meet the general admission requirements of Alvernia College.

First time college students with less than 12 credits of college level work must have a composite score of 1000 or greater on the SAT and a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher, with consideration given to college preparatory course of study.

College students must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 with consideration given to individual courses. Grades and credits from developmental courses are not considered.

Two (2) letters of reference

As required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, applicants shall have completed work equal to a standard high school course with a minimum of 16 units, including 4 units of English, 3 units of Social Studies, 2 units of Mathematics (1 of which is Algebra) and 2 units of Science with a related laboratory or the equivalent.

Advance Standing for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):

Advance standing is available for the Licensed Practical Nurse. Details of the Advance Standing Policy are available from the Nursing Department.

Admission Requirements for Sophomore Level:

This level is for college students who have completed at least 30 credits of college level work including the prescribed science courses for the freshman year. To be eligible for admission to the nursing program the applicant must:

Meet the general admission requirements of Alvernia College.

A minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher

Provide official transcripts or document current enrollment in the prescribed science courses for the freshman year.

Two (2) letters of reference

Licensed practical nurses are integral health team members who provide expert care for challenging patients under the direction of the RN. This is a 10 1/2 month program that prepares graduates to take the NCLEX-PN examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Work and employment

Graduates of the program are qualified to work in healthcare facilities such as nursing homes, home healthcare, physicians’ offices, and ambulatory care.

Career advancement

Licensed Practical Nurses can use their education and experience toward an associate degree in nursing at RVC. The LPN Bridge for the Associate Degree Nursing program allows LPNs to complete the nursing program without repeating courses taken in the LPN program. For details, see “LPN Bridge.”

Program approval and vocational licensure

The program is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Program graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN according to the requirements for licensure in the Illinois Nursing and Advanced Nursing Practice Act.

Information sessions

Testing and transcripts

Applicants who have not attended college before will need to call (815) 921-2382 to schedule an appointment for an assessment test. Transfer applicants should submit all transcripts to the Rock Valley College Admissions and Records Office with indication of the intent to apply to the nursing program

This 49 week full-time certificate program prepares students to achieve the professional practice requirements of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPNBC), earn a Practical Nursing Certificate, and on recommendation of the program faculty be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in British Columbia.
WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED

A number of abilities and skills are required to be successful in the Practical Nursing program. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

An ability to communicate clearly in English, both spoken and written

It is an expectation of the Practical Nursing Program that students demonstrate responsible, accountable behaviour in terms of maintaining a pattern of regular attendance, and establishing effective working relationships with student colleagues.

Students will be required to access on-line resources and to submit typewritten essays and assignments. As a result, basic computer literacy and internet access are necessary.

Accurate math calculations are critical for safe nursing practice. As a result students will be required to complete a math screening process once they are qualified for admission. The intention of the screening process is for students to identify their learning needs early and to seek remedial assistance in order to position themselves for success in the math components of the nursing courses. The goal for the math screening is to achieve 90% and opportunities to rewrite will be provided with the intention of helping students improve their marks. Students will not be denied admission to the program if they do not achieve the 90% but it is strongly recommended they obtain remedial help immediately.

An interest in caring and providing service to an ethnically and culturally diverse clientele of people spanning all age groups

Strong communication and interpersonal skills in the context of their collaborative relationships with clients, instructors, student peers, and multidisciplinary health care team members

Critical thinking skills - when providing care to clients the student must demonstrate responsible, safe and ethical behaviour and make informed, considered judgments

An ability to work independently and as a member of a health care team

The ability to carry out complex skill sequences of 15 or more steps that require psychomotor ability. These skills will include but not be limited to the preparation and administration of medication to clients, wound management, and basic and specialized personal care skills and comfort measures.

The capacity to maintain their own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being while working in a rewarding but often stressful working environment

Access to personal transportation is recommended for the PNP 161, 162, 163, and 173, the Practice Experience and Preceptorship components. Students who are not able to provide their own transport may have difficulty meeting the requirements of these courses.

The Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) to B.S.N. program is a pre-licensure program designed for the practicing L.P.N. who desires to become a registered nurse and earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The L.P.N. student may receive upper division nursing credit depending on previous education and work experiences. Each applicant’s L.P.N. transcript will be reviewed to evaluate prior academic activities.

Admission to the ASN program is completed in two steps:STEP I
For admission to the ASN program, the student must:
1. submit a completed application and the University application fee (by May 30 for fall semester admission and October 1 for spring semester admission);
2. be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED) and submit official transcripts (unless transferring at least 24 hours of college coursework);
3. have official transcripts from all colleges attended submitted directly from the institution of attendance;
4. earn a required score of 40 on the National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Exam OR ACT score of 19 OR SAT score of 910 (A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited university will exempt a student from the pre-nursing test requirement). If student is seeking acceptance into the LPN-RN advanced placement track, LPN must score at least 70 on the NLN ACE I exam, in lieu of other tests.
5. have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on 4.0 scale for all college work attempted (For additional information contact the office of Admission and Records at the School of Nursing, Montgomery campus.);
6. present evidence of current Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse licensure if the student is entering the LPN-ASN advanced placement track, as well as documentation showing one year of LPN work experience during the past three years unless graduation occurred within the past calendar year; and
7. be able to achieve certain core performance standards required by the duties of the nursing profession.

When ENG 1101, PSY 2200, MTH 1112, BIO 3347 and BIO L347 have been completed with a grade of C or better, the student may proceed to step II.

STEP II
For admission to the ASN nursing course sequence (NSG 1131, NSG 1135, 1151, etc.), the student must:
1. meet all admission requirements under Step I;
2. submit the “Application to ASN Nursing Course Sequence” (by May 30 for fall semester admission and October 1 for spring semester admission);
3. have maintained an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on 4.0 scale on all college work attempted.

NOTE: If a student is attempting to transfer credit for nursing courses from another school of nursing (which must be NLNAC accredited), a letter from the dean/director of that school must be submitted stating that the student was eligible for continuation in the nursing program. If the student was not eligible for continuation in the program, the student must take all required Troy University ASN nursing courses (i.e., no nursing courses will be transferred).

Students are admitted into the ASN Program’s Generic Track and LPN Advanced Placement Track in the Spring and Fall terms. The Admissions Committee reviews all records of qualified applicants. Applicants in each track receive a ranking based on measurable criteria (i.e., test scores, GPA, etc.). Deadline for filing application and all required admission documentation is May 30 for Fall admission and October 1 for Spring admission.

Admission and Progression Requirements

Admission: Admission to the ASN Program is completed in TWO steps.

STEP I: For admission to the ASN Program, the student must:

be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED) and submit official transcripts (unless transferring at least 24 hours of college coursework);

present evidence of current Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse licensure if the student is entering the LPN-ASN advanced placement track, as well as documentation showing one year of LPN work experience during the past three years unless graduation occurred within the past calendar year; and

be able to achieve certain core performance standards required by the duties of the nursing profession.

The practical nursing program at Davenport University provides nursing education to prepare the graduate at the diploma level with the skill and knowledge necessary to function in the role of Licensed Practical Nurse.

This program prepares the practical nursing student to:
Gather basic clinical information on specific needs of stable patients with predictable outcomes.
Assess, analyze and interpret findings in structured settings.
Perform basic technical nursing skills for the individual patient.
Apply for the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX-PN) for the Practical Nurse upon graduation.

The Practical Nursing Diploma is offered in the Warren and Midland locations.
