Practical Nursing from Brunswick Community College Tennessee

The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide nursing care to children and adults.

Students will participate in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.

Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Upon successful completion of the associate degree program in nursing and the state licensure examination, the graduate is prepared for a career as a registered nurse. The graduate nurse will be competent in the standards of practice while performing the roles of the associate degree nurse: provider of care, manager of care, and member of the discipline. As a provider of care, the associate degree graduate is capable of thinking critically, competent in acute and long term care, and community settings, accountable for actions and committed to the value of caring. As a manager of care for a group of clients, the associate degree graduate collaborates, organizes, and delegates care using effective communication and evaluation skills. Accountability, advocacy, and respect characterize the qualities of a nurse manager. As a member of the discipline of nursing, the graduate will participate in the health promotion of individuals and groups. The graduate nurse will be committed to professional growth, continuous learning and self-development.

Description:
This program prepares beginning caregivers with a professional approach to their practice, a holistic view of patient care, a process orientation to their work, and a clear understanding of their role within the health care system and within the nursing community.

Following completion of the program and an orientation to the agency, the graduate will be able to provide care in partnership with other health care professionals to selected clients of all ages chosen on the basis of acuity and complexity in the following areas: long-term care, extended care, home care, community settings, and general medicine and surgery areas in acute care.

The graduate will have the potential to provide care in specialized areas such as pediatrics and post partum maternity following additional experience, ongoing education and supervision.

The Associate Degree Nursing program is a concentrated two-year program that includes a combination of science, liberal arts,and focused nursing courses. The program prepares graduates for work in hospitals and long-term care facilities that focus on nursing care of individuals with common acute and chronic health problems.

After earning an associate degree, students are eligible to take the national examination for licensure NCLEX as registered nurses (RN). The licensing exam is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

The Associate Degree program helps provide nurses to medically underserved regions of the state and is offered at five campuses. This is a concentrated two-year program that includes a combination of science, liberal arts, and focused nursing courses. After earning an associate degree, students are eligible to take the national examination for licensure as registered nurses (NCLEX). The School of Nursing supports the national movement toward the baccalaureate degrees for entry-level nurses and encourages associate degree graduates to pursue a baccalaureate degree or higher.

Associate Level of Nursing Program:

The Associate program provides a comprehensive foundation of general education and nursing knowledge necessary for nursing practice and continuing professional education. The program provides the necessary skills and competencies for graduates to assume registered nursing positions in acute, rehabilitation, and long-term care agencies. This is an entry level program into nursing.

The Associate program is a six semester year-round program comprised on 72 credit hours available online or on-site (available in Columbus, OH only).

The basic curriculum is a four-year sequence of nursing and science courses leading to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) that also meets the eligibility requirements for the New York State Registered Professional Nurse examination. This 124-credit program emphasizes a holistic approach to health and wellness and focuses on the nurse’s role in research, advocacy, teaching, change, and management.

The basic curriculum consists of a planned progression of nursing and science courses. The lower division courses are prerequisites to the junior-level nursing courses. The course of study builds on holistic concepts that support the connection of mind, body, and spirit. Within this framework, students explore the different approaches to promoting health and providing care during illness and meeting the demands of long-term care. Students must fulfill the undergraduate General Education requirements. Students follow a defined plan of study for each semester.
