The pre-nursing area of study is compatible with four-year baccalaureate degree programs that call for the completion of general academic requirements in the first two years and concentration on nursing courses in the last two years. Students wishing to transfer into a four-year nursing program must fulfill certain basic requirements, especially in the sciences.
Because professional nursing involves dealing with people under stress, a balanced program in the humanities and social sciences is necessary for developing effective communication skills.
Students should make choices that meet the transfer requirements of the program of study that they plan to pursue.

The College of Nursing endeavors to admit all qualified applicants who can reasonably be expected to successfully complete the upper division baccalaureate nursing program. The College accepts qualified men and women of varied ages, educational backgrounds, religions, cultures, and ethnic-racial origins. All students complete the required pre-nursing sequence which provides a common base on which to build the nursing major. The diversity of educational backgrounds may include: a minimum of the required pre-nursing courses; a degree in a non-nursing area; or an associate degree or diploma in nursing. The College admits qualified students without regard to national or ethnic origin, race, color, creed, sex, age, or disability that does not interfere with nursing performance.

Students are encouraged to seek academic advisement early in the pre-nursing curriculum from the Admissions Office to facilitate progression and timely enrollment. Official application to the College of Nursing should be made after completion of thirty semester hours of required courses. Selection is competitive.

The applicant is evaluated on the basis of overall academic achievement as well as achievement in required courses. All required documents must be on file before the application is reviewed. Acceptance is granted pending satisfactory completion of required pre-nursing courses. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the Admissions and Progression Committee.

After acceptance, an updated transcript is required at the end of the semester prior to enrollment in the College of Nursing. Initial enrollment may be either fall or spring semester. Select courses are offered in the summer.

Admission Requirements
Evidence of graduation from a high school approved by the State Board of Education or official score report of the G.E.D.
Completion of 62 semester hours of required pre-nursing curriculum at a regionally accredited college or university with an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 scale. A 2.50 GPA for both Anatomy & Physiology courses is required. Required pre-nursing courses must be taken for a letter grade rather than pass/fail or credit/no credit. Only grades of “C” or above are accepted for transfer credit. A total of two courses may be repeated within the past five years. Each course may be repeated only one time.
Acceptance of College Level Examination Program (CLEP) or Proficiency Examination Program (PEP) credit will be given individual consideration by the Admissions and Progression Committee.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English.

Application Process

1. Completion of 30 semester hours of required courses which must include eight (8) semester hours of the required science courses. A minimum of two of the four required science courses must be completed before initial consideration for admission.
2. Completed Application Form with a nonrefundable fee of $50.00.
3. Official high school transcript or an official G.E.D. score report.
4. Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities attended.
5. Scores from the TOEFL for applicants whose native language is not English.
6. An interview is optional at the request of either the College or the applicant. Semester Projected Deadlines Selection Date

The applicant is responsible for submitting current college transcripts to keep the Admissions Office informed of progress with the pre nursing course requirements. It may not be possible to offer admission to all qualified applicants because of a highly competitive applicant pool and space limitations.

Selected applicants receive an official acceptance letter and an Enrollment Form which must be submitted to the Admissions Office within 4 weeks of notification of acceptance. No enrollment deposit is required. Applicants who are not accepted will be informed by mail and must in writing request the academic file remain active for a maximum of one year

Prerequisites
High school studies should include:
2 years of algebra;
A third year of math (recommended);
2 years of biology; and

1 year of chemistry.
If students have not completed one year of high school biology, BIO 102 must be taken before BIO 108.

All students must complete the General Education core degree requirements (link to page 2 of general education core requirements), and they must complete the following courses specific to the concentration. Courses required for the concentration may also satisfy General Education requirements.
