The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide nursing care to children and adults.

Students will participate in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.

Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Practical Nurses work in an inter-professional practice health team assisting clients to meet their physical, emotional and psychological needs. At Bow Valley College the Practical Nurse Diploma Program can be completed in just 17 months. Upon successful completion of the program and the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE) you are eligible for licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

Program Admission Requirement

· Grade 12 or GED
· Biology 12 with a grade of C or equivalent within the last 5 years
· English 12 with a grade of C or equivalent.
· Acceptable RCS or HSA/RCA Certificate (certificates issued prior to 1993 also require Caring for Persons with Dementia course)
· Minimum 600 hours as Resident Care Attendant in a facility working with a group of patients at the same time (confirmed by
employer’s letter) within the past two years.

Access to Practical Nursing at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Canada

This program prepares resident care attendants or home support workers to work in acute care hospital areas, continuing care facilities or community facilities with a practical nursing certificate.

The program focuses on health promotion and prevention for individuals from infancy to adulthood. Effective communication skills, orientation to practice of nursing, and the process of health and healing within the context of the community are examined.

Each semester includes a practicum experience related to the particular client population.

This program is a one year Certificate currently under development for delivery in Merritt for September 2009.

Practical Nursing at Hagerstown Community College

This is a career-oriented program leading to a certificate in practical nursing within three full semesters over one calendar year. It prepares students for employment in a rapidly growing health care system. Students are admitted in May of each year. The curriculum consists of didactic and clinical learning. Community facilities provide the settings for clinical experience. Emphasis is on providing basic nursing care to assist persons with acute and chronic (recurring) health problems in a variety of settings. Math Requirement—Students accepted into the program must pass a dosage calculation quiz with a score of 90% or above. Practical nursing students must maintain a grade of “C” or better in all required courses and provide appropriate health records including a negative TB test within one year. Students must also have current health care provider CPR and meet the program’s technical standards. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for the NCLEX-PN to become licensed as an LPN.

To apply for the next class beginning in August, please fill out this application packet and
return it to the Admissions Office by the May 31st deadline. Applicants will be
ranked for admission by awarding points based on the following:
• Cumulative Prerequisite and Extra point grade point average (GPA); this includes
your required courses along with the extra point courses.
• Performance on the ACT, COMPASS, OR ASSET and NET tests (assessment
tests); (online assessments assistance websites have been included in your
application packet.)
• Proof of current certifications in any of the following areas: Nurse Assistant,
Mental Health Tech, EMT and/or Paramedic.
• Submitting the essay questionnaire.
• Completion of extra point courses with grade of “C” or better by the application

Description:

This program prepares beginning caregivers with a professional approach to their practice, a holistic view of patient care, a process orientation to their work, and a clear understanding of their role within the health care system and within the nursing community.

Following completion of the program and an orientation to the agency, the graduate will be able to provide care in partnership with other health care professionals to selected clients of all ages chosen on the basis of acuity and complexity in the following areas: long-term care, extended care, home care, community settings, and general medicine and surgery areas in acute care.

The graduate will have the potential to provide care in specialized areas such as pediatrics and post partum maternity following additional experience, ongoing education and supervision.
