Basic nursing part-time

The School of Nursing offers the RN to BSN Completion program. Recognizing the complex difficulties that adult nurses face in returning to school to obtain a BSN, the School of Nursing has streamlined the curriculum to allow completion of nursing courses in 12 months. Nursing courses will be offered in the evenings and coordinated with the times that general education courses are taught. Students will be able to take some courses in an accelerated format. Competency testing for anatomy and physiology has been eliminated and RNs receive credit for recognition for completion of this content in their previous program. The course sequence and list of prerequisites are available form the nursing academic advisor.

RN-BSN students who have completed one year of clinical practice may develop an Individualized Plan of Study (IPOS) for the senior nursing courses. This plan developed during NUB 421 IPOS Seminar in the fall semester, will recognized professional experience of the RN and enable the student and course faculty to design specific goals and activities for completion of clinical objectives for NUB 401: Leadership and/or NUB 450: Community Health. This approach avoids duplication of experiences, allows flexibility in completing clinical hours, and enables the RN to design individualized activities that foster professional growth in relation to course objectives.

Prepares students to extend their clinical, legal, ethical, moral and cultural knowledge while using a range of communication skills in telephone triage.

These skills will impact on the effective delivery of services in the primary, secondary and emergency arenas and facilitate participants’ involvement in telephone triage and consultation.

Admission requirements
A Bachelor of Nursing degree or equivalent. Two years professional experience is preferable.

A relevant Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent prior learning including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Special admission requirements

Students are required to provide:
A letter of support for practical training and support from your employer is required;
A letter of support from an approved Clinical Mentor; and
Evidence of a minimum of 20 hours employment per week in clinical specialty

Nursing Studies are part-time programmes which offer you the opportunity to achieve a named award through the University’s modular structure. The module options have been specifically designed to help you build on existing professional qualifications.

Modules are delivered at the University’s campuses in Paisley, Ayr, Hamilton and Dumfries. Students can select from a range of nursing modules using the flexibility of the modular structure. Programmes can be developed to reflect individual interests, future career plans and integrate new areas of study with students’ existing professional experience.

Students studying on the BSc Nursing Studies programme have the opportunity to select a named minor title as part of the programme in the area of Community Health & Orthopaedic Nursing. (Due to the nature of the programme, Orthopaedic Nursing is available only at Paisley Campus.) For BSc Nursing Studies with Community Health, students will also complete 2 core modules in ‘Community Development in Primary Care’ and ‘Family Centered Care’. For BSc Nursing Studies with Orthopaedic Nursing students will also complete ‘Trauma Orthopaedic Nursing’ and ‘Elective Orthopaedic Nursing’ (please note that ‘Foundations of Orthopaedic Nursing is a pre-requisite for these two core modules).

To be eligible to enter a pathway, students should have a minimum of 300 credit points (120 at Level 7, 120 at Level 8 and 60 at Level 9). To obtain this award, students must undertake three modules at Level 9.

The length of time it will take to complete a chosen programme will depend on students’ entry credit, the exit award selected and the number of modules taken during each year of study. One of the main principles of the modular structure is that students can study at their own pace with modules taken on a day and/or evening basis depending on their chosen stream.

Applications are restricted to health and social care practitioners. Candidates should provide evidence of appropriate prior educational and professional experience and learning. This is normally expected to equate with 120 credits at level 2 (diploma level). Completion of an academic essay will be required on submission of the application form. All eligible candidates will be invited to attend for interview.

The RN to Master of Science program has been created specifically for registered nurses whose career goals will be enhanced through graduate study. The program facilitates and supports educational mobility and strengthens the leadership abilities of nurses who already have a foundation of professional experience. When required undergraduate courses have been completed, students in this program proceed directly into the master’s program, bypassing the baccalaureate degree. A BS in nursing is not required.

This program is designed so that students may complete the required junior an senior undergraduate nursing courses in one full-time year, beginning in May and ending the following May. Part-time study is also possible. The RN completes courses in new areas of content. In addition, there is assessment of and credit for previously attained knowledge and skill. The RN to master’s program is built upon prerequisites to the nursing major that include courses in the natural and behavioral sciences, humanities, fine arts, and core courses required of all undergraduate students at USM.

In addition to fulfilling the admission requirements for degree status in the College of Health and Human Services, applicants for admission to the PhD program will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
A master’s degree in nursing from an accredited program equivalent to 30 semester hours of credit, or a master’s degree in a related health field with a baccalaureate degree in nursing;
A minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in a master’s program;
Evidence of one year of experience as an RN prior to enrollment;
A TOEFL score of at least 250 (computer-based) or 600 (paper-based) (for international students only);
Evidence of current licensure to practice professional nursing; (Students on foreign student visas must present evidence of their country’s nursing licensure or the equivalent.)
A resume of professional experience;
Three letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources. At least two of the references must be from persons who have had contact with the applicant within the last two years;
An interview with one or more persons on the Doctoral Admissions Committee;
A writing sample describing goals in pursuing a PhD in Nursing degree;
Evidence of a prerequisite graduate-level course in applied statistics (past 2 years).
