Criteria for acceptance to major
Students are accepted to major in nursing after their third semester provided that they have earned 48 credits and that all of the following conditions are met:
Minimum overall cumulative GPA of 1.90
Minimum major cumulative GPA of 2.00
Completion of ENGL 120 and ENGL 121
Completion of NURS 200, NURS 251, and BIOL 251.

The Faculty of Nursing was founded in 1982/1983. The Faculty of Nursing student obtains after a 10-semester study the degree of Bachelor of Nursing. The Faculty comprises the Departments of Medical and Surgical Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Nursing Services Administration, Community Health Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing. In 2000/2001 the number of undergraduate students was 1258 and the faculty staff members are now 40.
Mission:
The Faculty of Nursing, with an interdisciplinary approach undertakes the duty of honoring graduates competent in nursing according to national and international standards. It provides practical solutions and professional consultation through research and shares in protecting the community against health hazards.
Strategic objectives:
The students are prepared to provide comprehensive nursing care for medical-surgical, obstetric, gynecological, pediatric, and geriatric patients emphasizing on the ethical and legal aspects of nursing care.
Students will be able to play effective roles and take the administrative responsibilities in different community settings.
Utilize the nursing process in the delivery of health care to individuals, families, groups and communities.
Provide comprehensive nursing care to individuals and groups of all ages at all levels of wellness and illness.
Apply communication skills in daily work with patients and staff, and others.
Utilize learning process with individuals and groups in different institutions (educational and health care settings for advancement of health).
Demonstrate leadership skills in achieving nursing goals in a verity of settings.
Use research skills in the promotion of health and nursing profession.

The programs have been designed based on students’ different previous experiences and potential abilities in nursing, cooperated with potential and actual demand from the job market, and students’ career planning. The content includes bachelor and master courses to increase students’ nursing and professional credibility as qualified personnel to serve the healthcare organizations and communities.
Features
Department of nursing provides the most elective course for the versatile development and career planning of the students. The program contains 12 pairs of nursing courses targeted in both general and specialty requirements to meet both students’ achievements needs and markets’ demand. The joint and internationalized programs have started in 2002 to encourage students participate in learning activities oversea. The advanced English courses have been designed and integrated into general courses and daily activities to enhance students’ English comprehension and the ability in competition internationally.
Programs
Undergraduate
Undergraduate students in the two-year and 4-year programs have to complete 72 and 140 credits respectively including general required courses (in language, sociology, mathematics and art), basic specialty, professional specialty and core requirements. The 12 professional specialty courses include the following: advanced medical-surgical nursing, long term care, pediatrics, ob-gyn, oncology, geriatrics, acute and critical care, mental health, school health, occupational health and community health courses in nursing.
Graduate School
The department of nursing offers master programs in adult health nursing, gerontology nursing, psychiatric nursing, women health, pediatrics nursing, community health nursing, and nursing informatics. The department also invited prestigious scholars from United States and Australia to provide internal nursing courses in International health policy and practice, alternative treatments, professional courses for nurse practitioners. The goals are to cultivate leaders with versatile perspectives for nursing practice in the currency of international nursing development. The teaching strategy applied the self-learning contract model to motive students’ self-learning, critical thinking and creativity. Students must complete a minimum of 40 credits for master degree.

This option trains students to become nurses who, together with other professionals, can assist and guide psychiatric patients so that they might attain the maximum degree of self-care and independence.
The coordinating task of the psychiatric nurse is of central importance. The accent is on counselling and nursing of individuals who are temporarily or semi-continuously affected by psychological and/or social problems. The training programme devotes attention to all important aspects of the job, both in the theoretical classes and during internships.
This option is intended for nursing students who are interested in the circumstances of psychiatric patients, who possess empathy and communication skills, and who are creative.

The nursing training encompasses a single three-year cycle within the Healthcare study field in higher education.
The first two years provide basic training, while the third year offers students an opportunity to specialise.
In our institution, there are three specialisation options:
hospital nursing
psychiatric nursing
social nursing
The first year provides a solid theoretical and broad general training, and introduces students to the field through internships. This year lays the foundations for subsequent years of study.

Mature Entry Application Information
A quota of places will be available in 2009 for mature applicants.Mature applicants should be 23 years old on or before 1 January of the proposed year of entry. If you wish to be considered for a place, you must apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) by entering the appropriate mature applicant code on your CAO application form.
You will then be invited by the Nursing Careers Centre to undertake a written assessment and interview. Applicants must successfully pass the written assessment and interview before being considered for an offer as a mature code applicant.

Overview: Understanding Your Degree
If you are attracted to a ‘hands-on’ career in mental healthcare, then Psychiatric Nursing is for you.
This exciting four-year degree in Psychiatric Nursing prepares you to meet the mental health needs of adults and their families in the 21st century.
Approximately half the programme is delivered in the UCD Health Sciences Centre, Belfield. Here you will benefit from interacting with other healthcare students, having access to top-of-the-range lecture facilities, library, information and computing resources, skills laboratories and student resource rooms. Lectures draw upon knowledge from the biological, sociological, behavioural and nursing sciences. Emphasis is placed on developing your critical thinking abilities and learning through the process of self-reflection.
The other half of the programme comprises hands-on, practice-based clinical placements spread throughout the four years. The majority of clinical placements (including a nine-month paid placement in Stage 4) will be spent in our partner healthcare centres:
• St John of God Hospital, Stillorgan
• Cluain Mhuire Community Services
