Avery W. Hall Scholarship - $500/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to a full-time incoming 1st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree student or R.N. student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.5/4.0.
Garland D. and Vivian J. Bull Scholarship - $200/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to an incoming full-time 1st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree student or RN student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0/4.0 and demonstrated financial need.
Marilyn Seidel Nursing Scholarship - $750/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to a full-time incoming 1st degree junior or senior student current 2nd degree student or RN student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0/4.0.
Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Undergraduate Scholarship - This one-time award of $250 is awarded to a qualified current 1st degree or 2nd degree nursing major. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or greater, rank in the upper 35% of class, and have completed ½ of the recognized nursing components of either the 1st degree or second degree track to be eligible for consideration.
Gaspar & Rose T. DiGiovanna Memorial Geriatric Nursing Scholarship- $500/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a full-time current 1st degree junior nursing major who has demonstrated a sincere interest in caring for older adult population.
Virginia Mills Edwards Scholarship- $1000/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a full-time incoming 1st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree, or RN student. Priority is given to applicants who are permanent residents of Dorchester County, followed by those from Somerset County, Wicomico, then LPNs or medical technicians desiring to become a registered nurse. While included in the spring scholarship mailing to eligible students, this scholarship is selected by a committee outside the Department.
Lois Brunkhorst Nursing Scholarship - $500/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a junior level nursing major who is academically gifted and demonstrates an outstanding potential for a career in nursing. Minimum qualifications are junior standing, a permanent resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a minimum college GPA of 3.0, financial need as verified by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, a completed application form, and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a nursing faculty member.

Dillard’s highly acclaimed nursing program is the first of its kind in Louisiana. In 2007, graduates earned a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

In April 2008, the Division of Nursing was chartered as a member of the Xi Psi at-large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the premier Honor Society of Nursing.

The faculty believes that broadly educated individuals apply knowledge through critical inquiry and critical appraisal, adapt to change, and are culturally competent. Graduates are, therefore, able to meet the competitive demands of their profession. The assessment and shaping of values is a vital part of the educational process. It increases acceptance of responsibility and accountability and promotes individual contributions to the profession and society. Preparation for practice must include opportunities that allow the individual to perform, compete and thrive in a multidimensional professional environment.

Courses of Study

The Division of Nursing offers three courses of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). Students interested in nursing may enter the university as: 1) generic or transfer pre-nursing students: 2) transitional RN-BSN students: or 3) LPN to BSN students. All students must meet requirements for the BSN degree.

The Nurse Education Program received a full 8 year accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission following the Fall 2007 evaluation visit. The next evaluation will occur in 2015. The Program also received 10 years of continuing registration through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. The Nursing Program at Southern Connecticut State University, established in 1969, is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing. The undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program offers three curricula: a traditional four-year program, an accelerated career entry program for individuals holding a BA/BS degree in another field, and a flexible program designed for registered nurses from associate’s degree and diploma programs. The degree requirements for a BSN degree include 128 credits. Upon completion of the baccalaureate program, students become eligible to take the licensing examination for registered nurses.

The educational environment promotes an attitude of inquiry and critical thinking where ideas are generated, assumptions questioned, solutions created, and the art of investigation prized. Learning is a shared experience with responsibility for learning vested in the student with the faculty serving as facilitators to the process.

The Department of Nursing has an established chapter, Mu Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The chapter is active on a local, regional, and international level. Select students with superior academic achievement and leadership potential are invited to the membership during their nursing studies.

Students in the Department have the opportunity to become involved with the department’s chapter of the National Student Nurses Association. Students are encouraged to join this organization during their pre-nursing studies in order to increase their awareness of nursing and broader health care issues.

It seeks to prepare its students to be responsible, competent professionals committed to leadership based on the Wesleyan tradition.

Overview
PLNU’s nursing program has a 32-year history in the San Diego community. The nursing program is six semesters of nursing curriculum and students apply to the program upon successful completion of prerequisite courses. Consideration for the nursing major is based on cumulative GPA, GPA at Point Loma, letters of recommendation, strength of application, and writing ability.

Following selection by the School of Nursing, students must satisfy minimal standards for physical and emotional health required by a nursing professional. These include a physical examination by a healthcare provider and per agreement with the San Diego Nursing Service Consortium and affiliated hospitals, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to your first clinical experience.

Once enrolled, you will learn about caring for the individual – infant , child, and adult – in a variety of contexts. You will also experience hands-on learning in a myriad of community and clinical settings.

Olivet’s nursing department is committed to preparing excellent and compassionate nursing graduates for a life of service to God and humanity. Local facilities provide outstanding clinical experiences in obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatric, medical, surgical, critical care, and community health nursing. Formal leadership experience can be gained by serving as a Nursing Student in Action officer or representative. Students are encouraged to apply their nursing knowledge and seek service and leadership experiences in international ministry trips, local civic and service projects, church work, and campus ministries. If desired, students may participate in peer mentoring and may receive mentoring from local members of ONU’s Kappa Sigma chapter of Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honor society. Alumni of ONU’s nursing program are well-prepared to move into a beginning leadership role and/or to immediately pursue graduate education, and are currently serving around the world as representatives of Jesus Christ and Olivet.
