In the second year, students receive a theoretical background to the various specialisation internships, incl. paediatrics, psychiatry, social nursing and home nursing, so that they could make an informed choice for the third year. Social skills, psychology, communication skills, and civil and work-oriented law are also important components of the training programme.

This specialisation qualifies you for the primary health care nursing of children, teenagers, adults and the elderly.
EDUCATION
The programme is offered as part-time distance education with two to five on-campus meetings of 2-3 days per term. The theoretical and practical components are integrated to form a unity. A degree project of 15 ECTS cr. is required. The project offers the opportunity to specialise further in a specific area of the field of primary health care nursing.
Technology
Students are expected to be computer literate and have access to:
- a computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.3
- internal memory (RAM) at least 1 GB
- web camera and headset for Marratech etc.
- broadband connection with at least 1 Mb/s
Video conferencing is also used.
DEGREE
Upon completion of the programme students are awarded a Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing with a specialisation in Primary Health Care Nursing. Diploma awardees also meet the requirements for the general one year master’s degree. Degree qualifications are specified in the programme study plan under the heading “Learning Outcomes”.
FORM OF INSTRUCTION
Teaching is in the form of individual or group assignments, conducted via a computer based platform. Teaching is also in the form of on-campus lectures and seminars.
EXAMINATION
There are no set examination periods, and generally no final exam at the end of a semester, an academic year, or a complete study programme. Examination usually takes place at the end of each course, module, or unit.
PROFESSIONAL CONTACT
Practical training placements (internships) can be completed full-time or part-time. The University guarantees placements in the county of Värmland, while allowing for exceptions if based on agreement. The number of places available for allocation is limited; therefore, students should expect added costs for travel and accommodation.
FURTHER STUDIES
Upon completion of the programme students may move on to doctoral studies. Students need to meet the prerequisites for doctoral studies in the subject chosen.

Graduates who complete the degree program in nursing, are educated to become competent in evidence based nursing. In addition to health promotion and illness prevention, nursing practice involves care, support, guidance and rehabilitation of people with various health problems as well as their significant others. Competent performance of a nurse is based on updated knowledge of caring science as well as social and physical sciences. Studies lead to competencies in provision of basic and specialist care in diverse nursing settings. Graduates will possess competencies to participate in, to coordinate and to develop team- and network capabilities.
To train public health nurses who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to promote and uphold as well as prevent illness in individuals, families, work and other communities, and the population and environment at large, whilst capitalizing on the strengths of clients and self-care. Competence is enhanced in nursing and public health working environments.

A cross-institutional Master of Nursing degree (by Coursework) enabling the student to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to apply for registration as a Nurse Practitioner to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia.
Developed in conjunction with the Flinders University in South Australia, Part One of the program enables the student to first enhance their individual knowledge and skill whilst working in their selected area of specialisation and then, through the second part of the program, to acquire the theoretical knowledge and skills required of a Nurse Practitioner in a specialist nurse or extended practice role.

EDUCATION
The theoretical component is offered as part-time distance education with regular on-campus meetings at Karlstad University. The practical training period is full time. A degree project of 15 ECTS cr. is required. The project offers the opportunity to specialise further in a specific area of the field of intensive care. Students are expected to have Internet access, as some of the teaching may be conducted via telecommunications technology.

Students are expected to be computer literate and have access to:
- a computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.3
- internal memory (RAM) at least 1 GB
- web camera and headset for Marratech etc.
- broadband connection with at least 1 Mb/s
Video conferencing is also used.
