Applicants for admission to the graduate program in nursing must meet the following requirements:
Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in nursing from a nationally accredited program (NLNAC or CCNE).
Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to applicants with a GPA of 3.3 or above.
Completed one year of professional clinical practice prior to admission.
Proof New York State RN licensure and current professional registration.
Meet all current college and program health requirements and provide documentation. Additional requirements will apply to clinical practicums.
Submit a current curriculum vitae and personal statement.
Submit two letters of reference (at least one from a clinical supervisor who can address clinical competence).
Submit official transcripts of undergraduate work.
Submit proof of certificate of basic life-support prior to entering clinical practicums.
Complete pre-admission interview.

The Master of Science degree with a major in Nursing, registered with the New York State Education Department, enrolled its first class in Fall 2005. The program now offers two concentrations:
Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health
Nursing Education
The graduate curricula, consisting of a core and specialty concentrations, builds on the knowledge base and practice competencies of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse and prepares the graduate for advanced professional practice. Graduates of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health concentration (38 credits) will be prepared to actualize the multi-faceted role of the C.N.S. in a variety of health care settings, reflecting the three spheres of patient/client, nurses and nursing practice and organization/systems. Graduates of the Nursing Education concentration (37 credits) will be ready to assume nurse educator positions in either academic or service settings or in patient education. The graduate program meets the needs of the working professional. Designed for part-time study, the program can be completed in seven semesters. Each class will enter as a cohort group, attending classes one day per week during the Fall and Spring semesters and one summer (additional hours are required for clinical/practicum courses).

The admission procedure has been specially designed for adults. In many cases the entire admission, advisement and registration procedure can be completed during one visit to St. Joseph’s. Applicant must bring the following:
Evidence of the high school diploma or its equivalent. (It is sufficient to provide evidence of completion of another educational program for which the high school diploma or its equivalent was required; for example, a nursing diploma, a community college transcript, or a professional license.) Please bring a photocopy of this evidence to be left at the office.
A photocopy of the transcript from a United States college–level English composition course.
A $25.00 nonrefundable fee.
Those who wish to register will make a nonrefundable tuition deposit at the time of registration. Full–time students (12 or more credits) pay $255.00; part–time pay $80.00. These amounts include a $5.00 ID card fee.
New York State law requires college students born on or after January 1, 1957, to be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella. Consult the admissions counselor for details.
Permanent resident or international students please note that you must bring their alien registration card. International students please see the International Student Admissions section of the SJCNY website.
Applicants submitting transcripts from foreign institutions may be required to submit educational documents to a St. Joseph’s College–approved foreign credential evaluation service for a course–by–course report. Applicants deal directly with the foreign credential evaluation service and are responsible for following the procedures of the service and payment of all fees charged for that service. The applicant may also be required to submit a word–for–word English translation of credentials by a College-approved translation service at the applicant’s expense.

A health clearance and photocopy of liability and malpractice policy with minimum coverage of $1,000,000/$6,000,000 are required prior to enrolling in clinical courses. All students and faculty will be required to maintain their own health insurance.
Students are also required to provide proof of professional licensure and certification in basic life support (CPR). Clinical/lab courses are also assessed additional fees that can be found in the course offering booklet.
Additional requirements may apply based on clinical/practicum agency placements

The Department of Nursing offers an upper-division baccalaureate program designed exclusively for registered nurses. The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission*. The curriculum is planned to maximize the strengths the registered nurse brings to the baccalaureate program. The program focuses upon the utilization of nursing theory; the promotion, restoration and maintenance of health for clients; the development of critical thinking and decision-making skills; and the development of leadership skills appropriate to beginning professional practice. The research process as it relates to nursing is taught and utilized throughout the program. Clinical experiences are provided at a variety of healthcare settings under the direction of the Nursing faculty.
The purposes of the program are to:
Provide the graduate with breadth of knowledge and values from both general and professional education
Prepare the graduate for professional practice in traditional and unstructured health care settings
Provide a foundation for graduate education in nursing
Provide the knowledge base and experiences that will facilitate resocialization from technical to professional nursing practice.
