Nursing Degrees Online

While preference is given to West Virginia residents, qualified students from other states are encouraged to apply. To qualify for admission to the School of Nursing basic program, a candidate must have completed one year of the prescribed courses listed below. Applicants are eligible for review by the Admissions Committee after completion of one full semester of course work. The prescribed courses include:

BIOL 100 - 3 Hours
BIOL 101 - 4 Hours
CHEM 100 and CHEM 103 - 8 Hours
ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 - 6 Hours
NURS 110 - 3 Hours
PSYC 201 - 3 Hours
PSYC 250 - 3 Hours
SOCL - 3 Hours

These courses may be completed at Glenville State College or any accredited institution of higher education.

Application forms for the School of Nursing are available in the Nursing Office, Room 101, Science Hall at Glenville State College after December 1. Application for admission to the School of Nursing must be made by February 15 of the year the candidate wishes to be admitted. The applicant’s academic record is the major factor in the decision on admission. The West Virginia resident must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above on a scale of 0.0 to 4.0 on all college work attempted, to qualify for consideration. Residents of other states must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above on all college work attempted to be considered. West Virginia applicants whose grade point average falls between 2.3 and 2.5 may petition in writing to the Admissions Committee for special consideration. Out-of-state residents with a cumulative grade-point average less than 2.5 may petition in writing to the Admissions Committee for special consideration. Such a petition must be submitted along with the application and must clearly state why the applicant should receive special consideration.

The review of applicants takes approximately two months. The students are notified by mail after review of all applicants is completed. Two weeks after receipt of the letter of acceptance, the student must send a letter stating acceptance of the position to the Registar, Glenville State College, 200 High Street, Glenville, West Virginia 26351-1292.

Dramatic changes are taking place in the field of professional nursing. It has become a challenging career for men and women. Nursing is practiced with all age groups and in a variety of settings. Hospitals, schools, homes, and community are just some of the possible practice sites.

The joint offering of the West Virginia University School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program by Glenville State College and West Virginia University School of Nursing is a unique and exciting program that combines the advantages of a small college environment and experiences in a rural setting with experiences in a major medical center. Students interested in the nursing program may enroll at Glenville State College as a pre nursing student meeting the admission requirements outlined below.

Registration in the pre nursing program during the freshman year does not assure admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN). Formal application for admission to the BSN program takes place early in the second semester of the freshman year. Enrollment in the BSN program is limited to 20 students.

For entry into the pre nursing program, the student must have an ACT composite score of 20 or greater or an equivalent SAT score. The student must furnish an official transcript from an accredited high school which indicates successful completion of the following courses: Biology 1 unit; Chemistry 1 unit; English 4 units; Mathematics - 3 units including at least 2 units in Algebra. Students who have not completed these courses will be considered on an individual basis. Enrollment in foundation courses may be necessary before beginning the usual freshman year courses.

The program meets the general education requirements of both Glenville State College and West Virginia University and incorporates the WVU School of Nursing professional nursing requirements.

As part of the WVU School of Nursing, the program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The freshman and sophomore years of this program are completed at Glenville State College. The junior and senior years are completed at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Montgomery, West Virginia.

The associate in applied science degree in nursing, offered through a special collaborative agreement between West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Ohio Valley University, is designed to guide qualified students through structured learning experiences in health care settings to meet eligibility requirements for the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Program education outcomes include:
Utilize the nursing process to provide therapeutic nursing interventions that assist the individual, family, and community in the promotion, restoration, and maintenance of health across the life span.
Create a caring environment to protect the person’s dignity while honoring their values, customs, cultures, and spiritual beliefs.
Use therapeutic communications to collaborate with the individual, family, community, and health care team in promoting patient centered care.
Make sound clinical decisions in a reflective manner using reasoning, analysis, and research.
Manage patient care consistent with Standards of Nursing Practice and ANA Code of Ethics.

Clinical nursing experiences are offered under faculty supervision at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Marietta Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, area nursing homes, and other selected community agencies.

Students requesting admission the nursing program must first meet the requirements for general admission to the college including foundation requirements in math, reading and English and be admitted to the college.

Applicants to the nursing must be eligible to meet requirements for licensure in the state of West Virginia as stated in the West Virginia Code. These conditions include:
Be a high school graduate or equivalent

Be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing

The Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses may deny testing to any applicant proved guilty of certain infractions such as, but not limited to, fraud, felony, or moral misconduct. (See Chapter 30, Article 7, Section 11 of The West Virginia Code).

Additionally, the applicant must be able to engage in educational and training activities in a manner that does not endanger themselves or others.

To be in good academic standing, students must:
Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or better in all work attempted and
Pass all courses with a grade of C or better.
A student who receives a grade of D, F, WU, or W in a required nursing course may repeat that nursing course ONCE.
A student may repeat ONLY ONE nursing course
Students must complete, with a grade C or better, any nursing course in which a grade of D, F, WU or W has been received.
Students who do not maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better after one semester will be dismissed from the program.
Nursing courses and pre-and co-requisite courses in which students earn a grade of D,F, WU, W must be repeated prior to the student’s progression to the next courses in the nursing sequence.
Students who repeat a nursing course and earn a grade of D, F, WU, or W will be dismissed from the program
Any general education course that is not a pre-or co-requisite of nursing courses and in which a grade of D has been earned must be repeated prior to graduation if it is to be counted toward graduation requirements.
All students must successfully complete the required standardized testing in order to progress.
Students must complete all requirements of a given level prior to progression to the next level.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is conferred upon completion of all required courses.

Meeting the minimum requirements to apply does not guarantee admission.
Freshman Admission

Freshmen may be directly admitted to the Nursing program. Requirements will be based on a combination of high school grades-point average (GPA) and composite ACT or total SAT scores. While preference is given to West Virginia residents, qualified students from other states are encouraged to apply. Direct admission space is limited and highly competitive. *High school students eligible for admission to the University may be admitted directly into nursing if they meet the following criteria: GPA ACT or SAT

Sophomore Admission

The majority of students are admitted at the Sophomore level. Applicants are eligible for review by the Admissions, Progression, and Graduation Committee. Students may apply for admission after one semester or more of college course work. Admission consideration in this case is dependent upon a minimum of 2.8 GPA on all college work attempted, completion of all pre-requisite general education requirements from any accredited college or university with a grade of C or better, and space available in the class. RN-BSN Students

Registered nurses are admitted directly to the WVUIT upper division option. Acceptance into the program is dependent upon:
The individual’s academic record; a grade point average of 2.5 or better on all college work attempted
An unrestricted West Virginia license to practice profession nursing or eligibility to acquire one
The number of spaces available
Applicants with a restricted license will be considered on an individual basis.

WVUIT offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The BSN program offers three options:
The RN option for the Associate Degree or Diploma nurse who wishes to earn the BSN degree. The student earns lower division credit for previous educational and work experience and enters the BSN program at the upper division level. The RN to BSN program is offered on line.
The joint program between WVU School of Nursing/Glenville State College/and WVUIT is a program whereby students complete the first two years of study on the Glenville campus and transfer as juniors to WVUIT to complete the upper division.
Basic BSN students are admitted to the Department of Nursing at the sophomore level after completing pre-requisite general education requirements. While freshman level general education requirements are generally completed at WVUIT, students may complete these courses at other accredited institutions and transfer to WVUIT upon admission to the BSN program. For example, WVUIT and West Virginia State University (WVSU) have an agreement that WVUIT will admit a minimum of 10 WVSU students who qualify to the BSN program. Students who meet admission criteria may also transfer from other accredited schools pending space available in a given class.

Candidates who are selected for the limited number of openings in the nursing program must meet the admission requirements of the College of Business, Humanities, and Sciences as well as the Department of Nursing. Admission is on a competitive basis. Individuals who have a felony conviction are NOT guaranteed entrance to health agencies for clinical experiences and are not guaranteed to be approved by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses to take the National Council for Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX).
